Bamboo Workshop at Arrowmont School

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn., is hosting a bamboo workshop this fall...

October 1-7, 2006
Craft & Art of Bamboo with Carol Stangler
This workshop answers the question, What to do with bamboo?" Examine the properties of this giant grass and explore its unusual strucure, cyindrical form and unique surface. Become familiar with specialized Eastern and Western tools and learn basic construction techniques of sawing, splitting, smoothing, joining and attaching. The botany and horticulture of bamboo will be covered, along with techniques for harvesting, transporting, cleaning and curing. Emphasis will be on bamboo's use as a new fine craft material for Western contemporary artists. Projects will range from simple cups and containers to elaborate garden structures. All levels. Tuition: $345

Carol Stangler, of Asheville, NC, is an environmental artist who has worked with bamboo for 15 years. She teaches bamboo workshops throughout the U.S. and is author of "The Craft and Art of Bamboo, 30 Elegant Projects for Home and Garden."
