Agree with Carol Meckes. To leave it along for now.
Want to know what kind of bamboo plants you have?
Was this bought from the Nursery? Or did you dig them up? If yes....
When did you dig it?

dug it up

I was told that it was yellow groove. There are pictures of it on my other posts.
I dug it up on Long Island NY. about 3 weeks ago. I put a clump of about 7 plants outside and about the same in a big pot that is indoors. Both plants the leaves are falling off but noticed there are new sprouts comming up from the soil of the plant that is inside. Don't see any from the one that's outside. but I put alot of mulch over it . Might not have made it threw yet. So your saying I should just leave it alone?.

Yes, leave them alone. Wait and See.

It already dug up and transplant it.

Your plants is now in shock period (losing their family/mother from the grove). Bamboo plants are telling you (communication) by showing you - losing their leafs!

Wait and See if they establish new area. Takes several year...for bamboo plants feel at home -Then, start grow and muplitply on their own - family.

How old these plants? The one you dug up.

Did you fertilize? If not - Mix a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote 28-14-14 into the soil.
If not available a soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow will do quite nicely.
If you already done it, next time fertilize - Spring (April) and again in Summer (July).

I Feel bad now that I took them from their family. I don't know how old they are. they were about 10 to 12 ft tall and about 1/2 inch in dia. Will they get there leaves back?.
I made a mix of cow manure , mushroom compost , and peat moss. I read that you should only use organic. The sprout that is in the house grew a 1/4 inch in two days. Thanks for your advice. If I get a grove I will send you some.
David.

Thank you Carole bring up his pictures...Yes, It is Yellow Groove. (PHYLLOSTACHYS AUREOSULCATA).

Question you ask: "Will they get there leaves back"?
It's too early to tell till Spring (outdoor plants) "Wait and See" if any new leaves sprout.
Indoor plants, mention have new shoot come up - helps sprout shoot will add new leafs to support.
Best is "Wait and See"

Dumb question maybe but I didnt think bamboo would send new shoots up in the fall. I thought only in the spring time.

Agree that particular species (Yellow Groove) bamboo shoot usually come in Spring not in the Fall.

His plants is in Shock Period or Stress being in container is what plants telling him.

Where I am in central Texas - if we have sufficient rains in the fall - the running bamboos do shoot again in the fall - but not with the same vigor that we get in the spring shooting season. Many of the fall shoots are small and skinny and should just be cut out of the grove if you have an established grove as they will never get enough sun to become strong poles. If you are just getting a grove started then leave the small shoots as they will help to feed the rhizomes and encourage your bamboo to grow.

In David's case - his bamboo is shooting in a "survival mode" .

re the lack of leaves on David's outside plants - if no leaves appear and no shoots appear now - don't be too disappointed if there is not any action in the spring time.

Also be careful about overwatering your bamboo - it is very easy to kill a bamboo plant with too much water.

The plants indoors, that new shoot has grown 2.5 inches in a week. I am not watering it much. The ones I planted outside were planted along a creek. My brother must not know what he is talking about . He said they like water. I just hope they make it.
Thanks again for all the input.
David.

Bamboo needs some water to help it get established - it just does not like to sit in water or have "wet feet".
