The Southeast Chapter (http://www.sec-bamboo.org) of the American Bamboo Society (http://www.americanbamboo.org/) 2005 Annual Meeting will be held at the Pavilion on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens (http://www.bamboo.caes.uga.edu/), Savannah, Georgia.
The event will include bamboo information, arts and craft displays, presentations, group craft projects and other activities.
Get together! Meet others, and share your interests and experiences with bamboo!
Learn about the great diversity of bamboo species and their versatility of uses.

Bamboo Arts and Crafts - Exploratory Workshops

9:00 am: View exhibits - meet new and old friends of bamboo

Registration is free but space is limited. Pre-registration is recommended. (see information below)

9:30 am *** Bamboo as a Craft Crop ***
Introduction by Mark and Carole Meckes of the Bamboo Arts and Craft Network (http://www.bamboocraft.net)

- Species Selection / Bamboo Materials Evaluation
An assortment of bamboo species will be used for the workshop activities.
Participants will have the opportunity to work with, and evaluate these species, and compare their properties and characteristics.
This will provide us with a better understanding of their true potential, as well as limitations and challenges to overcome.

- Grove management and Post Harvest Procedures
Harvesting, cleaning, curing, drying, storage, grading and selection, insect pests and prevention. Learn about these important stages needed to prepare and preserve your bamboo.

- Bamboo Tools and Techniques
Explore the possibilities! See what you can do with bamboo!
Work areas will be set up inside and outside of the Pavilion for participants to join in group activities and specific projects.
Artisans will demonstrate techniques and procedures used to create their works.
Participants will have the opportunity to work with various tools and accessories.
Learn how to split, saw, file, sand, carve, drill, bend, heat temper, engrave, embellish and preserve bamboo.

- Bamboo Garden Structures, Fences, Arbors and Trellises and more...
Learn how utilize your harvest to make functional and attractive bamboo features in the garden landscape.

- Bamboo mobiles and wind chimes
Choose the pieces, and create a hanging sculpture!

- Bamboo Jewelry Bead Making, Miniatures and Ornaments
Learn about the finer details of working with small pieces of bamboo.

- Bamboo Paper Making (cooking of bamboo to pulp has been prepared ahead of time)
Make a sheet of bamboo paper from the 'cooked' bamboo pulp.

- Bamboo Pyrography
Try your hand at writing and drawing on bamboo with a wood-burning pen.

- Bamboo Musical Instrument Making
Numerous bamboo instruments will be demonstrated.

Registration for workshops - The arts and craft workshops are free.
Pre registration is not required but is advised, as there will be a limit on the number of available spaces for each workshop activity.

Note to participants:
Please bring pictures or examples of your bamboo creations!
Participants will have an opportunity to present their works, share ideas and experiences. Interested? Let us know!

Tools to Bring
Participants are encouraged to bring their own preferred choice of hand tools, as there will be a limited availability of tools for use.
Examples are fine-tooth saws, chisels, rasps, files, sandpaper, knives, pencils, Dremel tools, wood-burning pencil/tool, propane torch, drill, bits, hole saws, splitters,safety glasses, dust mask... anything that you use when you work with bamboo.

About Tools, their Use and Safety Precautions
Participants are held responsible for their own safety and use of tools.
A liability release waiver must be signed upon registration for workshops.
There may be restrictions on the use of some power tools.

Directions to Bamboo Farm & Gardens

1. From Interstate 95 take Exit # 94
2. Bottom of ramp take Route 204 East
3. Go about 300 feet and make a right at the first red light. A Hardee’s will be on your right and an Exxon will be on the left
4. Go about 150 feet and make left on Canebrake Road. A La Quinta motel will be on the right and a Sonic and Best Value Inn will be on the left
5. Stay on Canebrake Road until it dead-ends which is about 1-_ miles
6. Make a left on US 17 and the entrance to the Bamboo Farm will be on the left about 100 feet
