EMISSIONIZERO has the honour to invite Oscar Hidalgo, a unique Maestro of rare competence and humanity and a dearest friend, for a residential workshop in two sessions that will take place in Italy.
Maestro Oscar Hidalgo has dedicated his life to bamboo research, and teaching the world about the limitless possibilities of this remarkable plant. Born in a bamboo house in Chinchina, Colombia, bamboo construction was common in his state, where many residential and public buildings were constructed using this cheap and widely available material. Like most homes, in his house the bamboo was hidden beneath plaster, and indeed, it looked like it was made of brick.
After he left the university, Oscar was intrigued by the possibilities of using bamboo in construction, and embarked on a project to construct a country club kiosk 23 meters in diameter using this material. Five days before the opening ceremony, there was a hurricane which distorted the building extremely, moving the kingpost 90 cm off-center. After only two hours of working with a winch, however, the structure was successfully moved back into place without collapsing. He was sold on bamboo. Amazed at its structural integrity and aesthetic possibilities, he embarked on a program of research which has taken him to Asia, Costa Rica, Brazil, and elsewhere to study this plant and to create experimental structures.

The actual dates of the two editions of the workshop are: 10 - 13 and 17 - 20 February 2005
Answering to the many questions received, we inform you that the two editions of the workshop are not in sequence in regard to the program and therefore participation is supposed to be to ONE edition.
In response to the various transport difficulties that might occur in a common working week that many among you - both from Italy and abrod - have pointed out, we hope you'll be pleased to know that the actual location has been changed for a much more famous and attractive one!
The two editions of the workshop "Bamboo from A to Z" by Oscar Hidalgo
will take place in Chianti a few kilometers from FLORENCE at the AGRITURISMO "LA GINESTRA" www.laginestra.toscana.it
We have suggested Oscar to give the two editions in different languages: one in English and one in Spanish.
Oscar says it's not a problem, as far as he is concerned, but he suggests it is preferable to leave the groups composition randomly. Therefore, in case participants express a clear preference for one specific language only, we will do our best to compose the two groups by linguistic competences. We cannot guarantee we'll be able to succeed, basically because we can imagine that it will not be irrelevant to potential participants to attend the workshop in a certain week or in a different one, but we will definitely try...
OVERALL PROGRAM OF THE WORKSHOP

• Types of bamboos
• Anatomy and Physiology of the plant
• The growing process
• The "strongest" and "weakest" parts of bamboo
• The longitudinal artificial deformation of the culm and their application in the construction of new structures
• The flexibility of the culm and its application in the construction of roofs
• Composite materials developped with bamboo
• Laminated bamboo and its use in the manufacture of furniture
• The use of bamboo in the construction of houses in several countries of Asia and America
Registrations
Participation fee, hotel and meals included, is 400 Euros
Cartificate of attendance, signed by Oscar Higaldo, will be given to participants at the end of the workshop
Dinner on arrival day is included (first edition: February 9 - second edition: February 16) while the editions will end in their respective sunday afternoons.

Leisure time activities
• A visit to FLORENCE will be organized in one of the afternoons with the possibility to have dinner in town in a typical restaurant (dinner in this case is not included in the fee)
• One of the evenings will be dedicated to MUSIC. We invite all participants who play guitar or other musical instruments to tell us, and - if possible - to bring their guitar with them. The international composition of the groups will make the evening a very nice moment... GET READY with your musical repertory!
• A presentation of the biological products made by LA GINESTRA will be organized. It will be possible to buy the products presented and tasted during the stay at the Agriturismo. The quality of the typical Tuscany's traditional products is such that many occasional visitors become faithful customers.
