The Portland Bamboo Festival
The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Bamboo Society and the Hoyt Arboretum are sponsoring a Bamboo Festival on Saturday, July 10, 2004 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This free event is open to the public and will be held at the Hoyt Arboretum 4000 SW Fairview Blvd. Portland. There will be plant sales and demonstrations of bamboo uses throughout the day. This is a great opportunity to learn about bamboo and it's uses as a sustainable building material.

*Running and clumping varieties available from timber bamboos to ground-covers
*Discover the beauty and utility of bamboo and bamboo products for your home and garden
Activities
9:00 am Festival starts. Stroll Hoyt Arboretum Creek to observe bamboo species.
10:00 am Controlling spreading bamboo by Dain Sansome, Editor, PNW bamboo newsletter
11:00 am Talk by Ian Connor, President, American Bamboo Society, and Editor, ABS Magazine
12:00 pm Building with Bamboo from around the world by special guest sustainable architect Darrel DeBoer, author of Bamboo Building and Culture
Darrel will show the creative work of people around the world making appropriate structures with bamboo. Stronger than steel in tension, bamboo needs just a few simple solutions: appropriate growth/harvest/preservation, joinery, and protection from sun and rain. Darrel will describe and discuss the many uses of bamboo with an emphasis on building. Countries include; Argentina Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany, India, Japan, the Philippines and Mexico. Followed by book signing
1:00 PM Rare Bamboo Auction
4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Tour/visit 8 acres of bamboo (near intersection of I-5 and I-205) On I-205 Exit Stafford Road and head north 1/2 mile to Borland Road. Turn right (east) and go to Bamboo and Koi Nursery at 2115 SW Borland Road, West Linn. Park on shoulder.
6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Chinese Supper at Bamboo and Koi Nursery ($5 suggested donation)
7:00 PM to 8:00 PM Darrel DeBoer bamboo tool demonstration and bamboo building techniques discussion with an in-depth slide show running in the background to include furniture, species examples, and the possibilities.
