When Phyllostachys aurea occasionally develops a few distorted nodes, a hole may appear at a juncture of a node, where there is normally a branch.
This seems to be caused by an `ingrown' or dislocated branch, or is where one had intended to grow.

This condition seems to begin very early in a shoots' development.
Notice how the holes have a certain design, similar to a branch socket.
The 2nd photo from the left has the branch component imbedded in the internode.
Often the hole is in the middle of the internode in photos(2, 5) and not connected at the node, where the branches usualy form.
