This fence, as shown still under construction, was built by first placing metal garden stakes at about 5 ft intervals, and then using old culms, largely unsuitable for craft use, harvested from the grove, to prevent teenagers from a nearby school from using the grove as a party hang-out.

Extensive damage was also being done to the culms on the steep slope within the grove, by kids bending them over till they snapped.
Initially this fence was constructed without the use of wire or string, but when pieces of the fence began to `dissapear' on a daily basis, it was necessary to secure the material in some strategic places.
After a year, there is now minimal intrusion into the grove.
This is because:
- This is the first year that the grove has ever been thoroughly cleaned and maintained
- this care and attention gives a sense of it `belonging' to someone.
- The fence works !!
