somebody threw out a beautiful rattan chair.
the surface has been painted with a clear varnish which spoils the natural material.
i was thinking i could scratch this off and sand the surface and then oil the rattan.
what alternatives are there to varnish. can the rattan be oiled instead?

thanks and regards

Yes, a good scraping and sanding and a few coats of teak
oil or some similar finish will feed the old dry rattan and give it a good look.
