I cut out some 4-6" (10-15cm) bamboo turtles and lizard like creatures out of chunky Phyllostachys sp with a scroll saw, and quickly etched designs on them using the edge of a 1 inch wide belt-sander.
They were painted by 5-10 year olds in a childrens' bamboo workshop.
The childeren applied the acrylic water-based paint very heavily and to speed up the drying, I placed the items in a warm oven.
The paint crackled, with very interesting effects, appropiately reptilian.
