Hello there. Here in Houston we are constanly dealing with mealybugs, but after seeing some photos you posted of the critters I'm wondering if I have a different species. The bugs themselves are purpleish in color with no visable legs and congregate under the leaves of new shoots only. All the other symtoms are the same. Cottony stuff, black ants and soot etc. Thanks for any help!

#2 is Palmicultor lumpurensis
(the much "badder" of the 2 mealy bugs)

oh it's a bad ass bug alright. soo creepy. makes me itch just looking at the pics! i did not overdose bamboo last spring. as a matter of fact- this bug is so nasty we had to treat again a month after the "overdose".

they are doing well now... and hoping for a bug free 2010!

I just about had nightmares when I had to deal with this creature - it was a very scary thing.

Fortunately the treatment using Merit helped - and yes the treatment had to be applied several different times. This cold snap that we are having this week with the low temps )(predicting 19 F in Austin) (not sure how low it is going to be in Houston) is very good for killing the Palmicultor lumpurensis mealy bug...

Hi Carole & all

Give a look at:
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/product/Tree-Shrub-Insect-Control/concentrate.html

This product seems to be good to mealybugs. I have Antonina pretiosa on my Henon since 1 year ago but I can`t find this product here in Brazil. Someone can help me about where I can buy it in Miami?

Hi Carole
Thanks! I will find one Home Depot. By the way, do you know some person that has used this product? It would be important to know some results.
Is this concentrated product liquid? It should be complicated to enter with this in the airplanes, it would be good powdered.
Bye,
