I put in a small Yellow Groove planting about 6 years ago. It's beautiful and I continue to love it's affect in the garden.

This past winter it took a hard hit. Many of the tall culms green on bottom about 2-6 ft but upper parts dead brown. Many new shoots coming up so I took out most of the dead brown canes. Hoping this doesn't harm the grove. I thought it might be crowding itself out though it has no containment structure around it.

I really love this beautiful grove. Will use the canes I took out for staking garden plants, many are about 2 inches or so wide. I want to try my hand at making a flute, found info online, just for the fun of it.

So glad I found this site, what a wonderful resource. Thanks. Hope to visit here often.

Hello,
Do you know that bamboo culms do not live forever and many culms only live about 6 years and then start to turn beige (usually at the top of the cane first) so that is probably what is happening in your grove.

You did the correct thing by taking out (harvesting) the older canes as they die out as that leaves more energy and space for newer canes to grow.

Carole,
Thanks for the note. Thats exactly what seems to be happening to my bamboo, with lots of new growth coming in.

Carole,
Thanks for the note. Thats exactly what seems to be happening to my bamboo, with lots of new growth coming in.

I'll have lots of garden stakes and maybe will try an artsy bamboo gate. I did learn recently that the culms need to dry about 3 years to make the flute I was hoping to try. I'll probably attempt it anyway just for the experience.

Thanks again,
Marie
