This is a great site. I spent hours last night looking and reading your posts. Thank you for passing on your wealth of knowledge for everyone's benefit.

I am wanting to build a bamboo guardrail and handrail for stairs (exterior). My thoughts are it would have a wood or metal frame with bamboo (approx. 1" diam) attached vertically. I want to use this same detail for exterior vertical sunshades to protect western sun from getting in windows. Is it possible to seal the bamboo so that it would last as long as sealed wood? How long does the bamboo need to dry before sealing. I would like to keep the different colors too if it is possible to seal them before they change. I read a link that was posted from chinabamboogarden.com to seal with silicone and polyurethane after boiling in boric acid. Is this effectic for outdoor use? I am not sure what the buiding department will say either. If anyone has experience with permitting bamboo building elements I would be interested to know your experience.

I also loved the picture from Mark of the propane torched bamboo. I assume this is time consuming and then requires the same sealing.

This is for a home in Austin so I was interested in getting in touch with Carole and seeing what you are doing. My email is pwgarch@sbcglobal.net.
