I have a stand of running bamboo that was planted to block the ugly apartment complex next door, but it is now above the complex and taking up much needed sun. I would like to crown, or cut the tops off of the bamboo, but am worried that it would harm or kill them. It seems like water collection in the hollow chamber would be a problem, a la mold etc.

Hello Kevin,
Go ahead and crown (top) your running bamboo - it should make it bush out a bit.

Cut it just above a node - that way no water will collect in the hollow portion.
