Great pictures! Could you describe the process of laminating the washi onto a silk backing? Did it add much weight and/or stiffness? Is it commonly done?

Thanks,
Here's a link showing the process of laminating washi to silk that Mikio Toki taught me. http://www.konodesign.com/tokicamp2007.html
I think he adds silk to only his larger kites 1 or 2 meters and up. It does add both weight and stiffness, but makes the kite a lot stronger.

Thanks for the reply. I saw your pictures initially, but had never seen that lamination process before....hense my "huh?".
I like painting on paper, but have always looked for some stronger form of it. I remember seeing a laminate once of paper afixed to a film backing...meant for the envelope industry, but never anything for washi.
Anyway, your experience there was great and something I wish I had done myself. Are there US workshops I could attend next year?
