Hi all, have just joined today, I am an absolute newbie at gardening as a whole, started this summer and really enjoyed it. I have transformed my modest garden from being lawn and 2 patio areas into, lawn, 2 veggie patches, a chicken coup and run, composting area, hammock area, and shed. My composting area, with wormery and bokashi is situated near to my chicken coup on part of my lower patio, however I want to enclose this area as at the moment from the hammock area and lower patio you can see it all.

Anyway this is why i decided to buy and try growing some bamboo as a screen/fence. As i'm sure you are aware it is autumn/winter in the UK and we are beginning to get frosts. I planted some seeds straight into a long pot 2 days ago (but wasn't sure how deep the soil needed to be or whether it should be covered) and left it outside, after reading some of the threads on here, I think I will cover them with clingfilm and leave them in a covered sitting area outside. Today I am thinking of trying the wet paper towel method with another 10 seeds, and also planting some in containers in the front bedroom and some in the back bedroom. I bought 300 seeds on ebay and think I will just experiment with them to find the best place to plant them.

My long term view as I briefly mentioned is to create a kind of screen of about 6 foot tall by 20 foot long, I'm hoping that the bamboo grows straight and is quite thick, have I chosen correctly here?! I am wondering how much of a root they have and therefore how deep a raised bed i would need.

I will keep watching the threads for tips but if anyone can suggest anything to me about UK weather conditions and how to train the bamboo, or any tips at all it would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance all.
