Bamboo marionettes are lots of fun, though, they can be a challange to make, because they seem to develop a mind of their own, often becoming something different, or acting in a way not originally intended!!
Ah well...
Such is character building!

My first `all bamboo' marionette made up of assorted Phyllostachys species.
The hair is made of painted sisal.

String Control Mechanism

With no instructions, and my first, this is what I came up with using bamboo.
I've since learned that the control mechanism can be as variable as the design, size and the shape of the suspended creature, and greatly affects the desired movement and gestures that the creature will make.
Marionette string length adjustment:

It is important to be able to make adjustments to the lengths of strings for the different parts of the body of the marionette.
The following is just one way of doing this.
Extra string for each suspended part is wrapped around a saftey pin, which is then slipped inside a bamboo tube.
This method allows for very fine adjustments.
These tubes are on the top of the controller that the creature is suspended from.
Another method is to cut fine slots on the controller mechanism and wind the string around these parts.
