Otherwise it would be a tree :) I believe it is so that it can use less energy to go higher. If it were solid it would have to use three times the material to go the same height.

soccerdude, how bigs the yellow groove now? Its planted right in the middle of a field so I would imaging it to spread pretty quickly. Got any pics?
BTW I think bamboo is hollow in order to allow it to lengthen faster allowing it to get taller & spread out more so that it can absorb energy much quicker than plants that are not hollow. I think this is one of the reasons that bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth.
