Oldhami Scale problem

Hi all, my 8 year old stand of Oldhami has developed scale on most of the culms.

Is it possible to get rid of the scale growth, or are these culms just toast?

Is there anything that can prevent the scale from forming on new growth?

We had some scale on Bambusa oldhamii at a public garden. Mark took some of the culm sheaths that had fallen off and rubbed the scale off.

It might seem gross - but it took care of the problem - as long as you could reach the scale...
