With any running bamboos its suggested if your planting them in the ground to give them about an 8 feet spacing. Within 3 years that 8 foot gap is going to be filled up. And also if you're worried about it taking over your yard there are things that you can do to prevent that. If you have the time you can actually cut back the rhizomes (around spring and fall should be fine), I have people who just buy large pots and plant them in the pots (this can be a risk in a few years however. Also if you do this make sure you leave about 2 inches underneath the pot for drainage purposes) and also you can get a rhizome barrier which is just an extremly thick plastic. Its 30" tall and you bury it in the ground around where you want the rhizomes to stop growing and leave about 2" above ground. If you bury it flush with the ground the roots can just jump over the barrier and therefore nullify what the barrier is there for.
