Aloha All-

I could use some advice-

I am attempting to grow guadua from culm cutting, but my first attempt I did not have much luck. I got 2 live starts from about 15 cuttings.

I figured if I told you all what I did the first time around maybe someone could tell me what I did wrong or right. I took a culm of about 3 years old, and cut it into about 8-10" pieces. Each 8-10" section had 4" of the culm above the node and 4-5" of the culm below the node with about a 4-6" piece of a main branch coming off the node area left in tack.

I put a little root tone around the node area where I saw a bud or the branch coming off the main clum. I then put the cutting in a 2 to 5 gallon pot mixed with Hawaiian soil, peat moss, and potting soil. The cutting was burried under the soil so the node was about 2-3" under the soil but the upper part of the culm and main branch was above the soil.

I has been 2-3 months since I did this and I have 2 pots that clearly have 2 starter plants. FYI, the 2 that made it where in the larger 5 gal pots and from cutting of the upper part of the clum. Do you think I should dump the pots from the first attempt that are not showing any signs of life, or is possible for them to still send up sprouts. I am about to give it another attempt at trying to propagate, so any suggestions would be much appreciated?

Aloha bambuddah,

I don't have any suggestions, but it has been some time since your post. How are your cuttings now?

Well the 2 plants from my original attempt are doing great. They have been planted in the ground and have more than double in size with many new sprouts shooting up.

My second attempt not so good. For the first few weeks everthing looked great- cuttings were showing new growth around the node buds and off the main branch part of the cutting.

Than I left for overseas for a month- keep the pots in the shade under a tree with a spray irrigation so they got a mist for about 30 minutes each morning. When I got back from holiday all the new growth seemed to have wilted and disappeared. The cuttings are no longer green in color, but a dead tan/grey.

I never received any replies from my original post.... wondering if any one might have some suggestions now?

I would assume you can treat the cuttings like you would any other clumping bamboo. I myself have, yet to root any clumpers. But I hope to soon. Here's a link that might be helpful. I guess it's okay to post here.
