I've just bought 2 acres in Thailand with quite a few stands of Dendrocalamus asper. The problem is because it's so nice to eat, the new shoots have been regularly removed, so there's not too many large culms. But the stands themselves are quite established.

What's the best advice for fertilizer/growing tips? Our soil is quite sandy, in a tropical climate with high rainfall. The monsoon season has just started, there's 1 - 3 hrs of heavy rain daily.

I'd imagine with good care it could grow quickly. I have access to various manures, chicken, pig and buffaloes.

Also, what about growing more in other parts of the land. The locals tell me to just take some and stick it in the ground.

Hi Scott,
Dendrocalamus will propagate from culm cuttings.
You can put the "joint part" of the culm or branch into soil and they will often root. They will need water to help them get started.

You can even lay the branch down horizontally and plant them in the ground.

Thanks, that's helpful. We have plenty of water, the rainy season has just begun so it should be a good time to plant.

Our soil is sandy too, which should help. Any advice for fertilizer?
