Purchased a Bamboo Walking Cane ~ PICS

[Bamabamboo]

Imagine my surprise when I was at my local trade day last weekend and I came across a Bamboo Cane. It looked to be old and used quite a bit.
Looks like it had 4 or 5 layers of laquer on it and it was scratched up pretty bad.
I have already started to re-finish it but I'm concerned I have taken too much off.....so I'm gonna stop sanding and just re-stain it.

Whoever made it dug it up with the rhizome attached and bent the rhizome
