Didn't see a thread for new shoots this year.

It's currently in the mid 50s here in south-western Indiana and still climbing. We've been getting rained on for the past few weeks. I sighted 2 new yellow groove shoots poking through my dormant zoysia grass today.

Zone 5B PA here.

I've been looking this week, as we are in the first day of a 6 day straight forecast of 70's. Hopefully mine will finally start to move. They usually have moved in the last week of April before, but it was never this warm this consistantly.

The Fargesia Rufa had shoots in late March.

shooting: Austin, TX
First to shoot here:
#1 Phyllostachys elegans (about March 17)
#2 Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectablis' (about March 19)
#3 discovered Phyllostachys makino shooting toward the drainage easement where there is moisture (March 24)
#4 Chinobambusa marmorea

All's been in the ground about 4 or 5 years.
followed by Phyllostachys aurea started about April 1
Phyllostachys nigra About April 8
Semiarundinaria fastuosa

Some creature has been eating lots of shoots in the front area which is a mixed collection of species - it might be a opossom, raccoon or one of my very agressive squirels.

I guess they are helping me "control" the bamboo....

My F. robusta has new culms(and plenty of them!)that are about a foot high now. Moso is just breaching the mulch and the spectabilis has one tiny point appearing.
Unfortunately, we had hail and snow Sunday night, a late frost Monday morning.
Quite a few of my newly sprouted bulbs were damaged and I lost several large
spectabilis culms to breakage from the heavy, wet snow.
I hope to have some photos of the robusta to post this evening.

Currently tracking 16 total shoots. 14 in the front, 2 in the back. The 14 are off of an 18 foot planting that I put into the ground 2 years ago. All 3 original 18 footers died leaving me with two foot high culms. That is all I got last year, was one new culm. Well it was busy, now I've got 14, some look like they'll get to be about 4-8 feet tall.

Yea for waiting!

Awww, I haven't checked for new shoots yet.

I cut out a 35' p. vivax culm this past Sunday evening, so that I could take a nice 4 foot-length leafy "conversation piece" of 3" dia vivax culm into the office, and have culm left over to give cut staff's to my tai chi teacher.

I'll check this next weekend...

16 in front, 3 in the back. Maybe 2, as I had to dig a little to find number 3.

The tallest in the front looks to be about 7-8 inches high too. Some 70's forecasted for the next 3 days.

I'm predicting that I'll be following over 75 shoots this year.

Although my Fargesia Rufa has that many already. It shoots like a weed.

Phyllostachys aureosulcata (Yellow Groove Bamboo)
That one is currently the tallest. I'm guessing 3-5 footer. Never know, could make it to 6-10.

Phyllostachys Aureosulcata thus far.

I'm Hoping to see my Nuda break ground. Alex is bringing me some Vivax tomorrow morning, so hopefully after the 2 week shock of transplant I'll get a rouge shoot or two.

These shoots above are in front of my house, close to the wall and the dryer vent. I believe that helped them get a head start. I've got tons of leaping rhyzomes in the back, and I fully expect shooting to start before May 1st.

My Fargesia Rufa started in April.

My Phyllostachys Heteroclada still haven't came up. One survived, the other top killed. Maybe it will survive as well.

So After Saturday, with the Vivax, I'll be up to 5 different outdoor species!

Here is all the new growth on this planting. This is it's 3rd year. The little bamboo bush is two short culms. The original 3 tall 18 foot culms originated from that spot. It's going wild this year!

I finally had a chance to visit my two stands of phyllostachys - neither is showing any signs of breaking ground with culms. Perhaps after a few April showers, the ground will soften enough to admit the 40 or 50 new culms I expect.

In prep for delivering p. vivax to Clint tomorrow, I took a few pics.

1 - blurry image of last year's culm stumps, left over from scaffold-building.
2 - bowing medium-size p. vivax culms, finding the light.
3 - digging up two sets of small culms.
4 - loading root balls into RAV for the morning commute northward.

That's like seeing your christmas present early!

Tonight I went searching for shoots in the back, and found over 20 new shoots. None are higher than 3 inches. Some are tracking out into the yard. But the biggest surprise...

My walkway is right between two large groves. Well they decided to shoot right accross the walkway and the middle was lifting up. Well, there they were, probably a dozen shoots pressing hard against the 1 inch thich, 8 x 8 pavers.

We removed 2 rows from either side, to shorten the landing and let the shoots rise.

The biggest thrill was seeing one of the largest bamboo shoots I've seen to date at my house. The shoots at my source grove all look like this one I found. I'm expecting it to rise at least 12 feet, maybe more. It's very impressive. I'll certainly have a picture soon!

Also, my plant along the side. The runner must have followed right along my house. I found 4 new shoots, the farthest is 11 FEET AWAY! I've been looking just 3 feet around the source plant. I had no idea it would go that far.

A very exciting May is coming!

--ADDITION--

Here is that shoot, the hugest one I've seen to date:

Well I have a ton up now, too many to count. Unfortunately last week we had a frost and the culms turned black. They're still upright (some at 10foot) and the tops are still green, but the exposed bamboo culms turned black. Does anyone know if this has killed them off or if it's just a cosmetic blemish?

Post pictures when I can.

Hi Kanoth,
I see what you mean about the bottoms turning black.....thats odd.....
I'm not an expert here but Its looks like your bamboo is going to make it just fine after the freeze......still not sure why they're turning black.
What species is it?

Kanoth, although we somehow avoided the recent frost you apparently got, being a bit north of you in Brown County we frequently get late cold temps after shooting and I have seen the culm coloration in your photo on Yellow Groove. The deep burgundy seems to be caused by cold but it is not damage, and that color will stay for a long time, if not forever on those culms. A couple of years back I though I had a black form of Yellow Groove until I figured out what had happened. Let me know if you're ever in the area, 150+ species here you can check out if interested.

Highest shoot in the front is now 63" tall. I measured two different culms growing 9 inches in one day.

The best is still yet to come. Those first shoots are only 3/8" diameter. The new one is probably about twice as wide and are the largest I've got. The big one I posted a picture of is only 7" tall, but it grew the most it has yesterday and should soon shoot up high!

Yeah, I have that same black line. They get that during cold weather where the culm sheafs are not covering them up. Probably has something to do which whatever keeps them green getting a little bit damaged from the cold. It will stay, but one day it may just magicly turn back.

This is the best time of year for any bamboo nut,

My Vivax had a surprise in for me after it survived its short lived shock...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3102/2495140865_519967c3b8.jpg {LINK (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cngodles/2495140865/)}

The the biggest shoot I've seen with my eyes.

Now, how tall can it get from a severed rhyzome? Hopefully bamboo shoots don't rely so much on the rhyzome network to grow large. I'll be happy if I get 10-15 feet, but maybe 30?!

1 1/8" diameter thus far. But it's not all the way out of the ground yet.

Bamaboo, you type Phy. vivax right above a picture of what looks like Aurea - I'm not sure that the text goes with that picture? It is the one of newly branching culm and the nodes - particularly the lower nodes sure look Aurea-like. As I said I may be applying the Vivax name to the wrong pic but thought I'd toss that out there.

It's been a while since I was last here - just wanted to update you on my boos in Limeyland - the Phyllostachys bissetii has given some nice larger shoots and some thinner around the edge - most will have to be taken off due to coming out at bad angles. I'll try to get some shots in soon before they get too mature.

I'm looking forward to seeing your 2008 bamboo growth pictures. You must be very proud of your P bisseti. How tall is it now?
All my bamboos are in full sun, and I hope they send up shoots all year round like yours.

I was wondering if your P Vivax is just 2nd year growth with the new shoots 5 times as thick as the originals.

My Vivax is currently getting to look like yours in your picture, but without the huge shoots coming up, and I just planted it this spring.

Should I expect to see what you have?
