Hello everyone, i am new here. I couldn't ID this plant on the internet so i'm hoping someone here could help me out.

It's a miniature, barely 2 ft high and looks like a clumping variety. The pics are of when the plant was healthy, it is now almost dead.

I really would like to find this plant again and take good care of it this time. I bought it at a small bonsai shop and the owner said it's a dwarf japanese variety but did not have the formal name. Please help!

Hi Joe

The species is called Chusquea coronalis, a soft leaf Chusquea with branches arranged around the nodes. It has a long rhizome neck on the culms so be sure to divide close to the centre of the plant when you propagate.

Joe.K,

I would have to agree that it is a form of chusquea, it has that appearance. If it is, most of them are a fairly cold sensitive plant, so If you had it outdoors, it may have gotten to cold, and damaged the leaves and culms. if things are warming up in your area, it may pull right through. check out the cold hardiness on that species, or any other that you replace it with, and then prep for that. I have several plants that are marginal in my climate, the loose the leaves and some culms in winter, but then take off again in summer. they will never get as big as they would normaly, but they do survive
best of luck with your little chusquea!

you can check out any of the major online boo suppliers, and see if they have that one- here are a couple of sugestions.

You're welcome. Actually, I am not so sure that it is a Japanese species, I don't seem to have it listed in my Japan source books. Would it more likely be Sth American? Anyway, in lower temperatures it fairs better in dryish sandy loam soil and does recover when it warms up. cheers

Hmmmm, just to put paid to that misnomer, perhaps a couple of images might help. Chusquea coronalis on the left, Chinese goddess on the right.
cheers

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. Turns out my chusquea coronalis is coming back, sent out new growth just this week.

I also bought an extra 1 gallon chusquea coronalis off bamboosourcery.com and received it today, just in case my other one didn't make it. Looks like it survived the shipping well, i'm very happy with my purchase experience. Here are some pics. Thanks again.
