I dont know if there is any truth in this, but I just got off the phone with the people at http://www.banana-tree.com and they said they can no longer sale moso seeds in the US, by law.......???

They said the US gov took the seeds they had and burn them, (along with a few other plants) He Said they have been inspected a quite a few times in the last few months.

Banana-tree said that the US has a ban on all Moso seeds now (I dont know about the plant) , due to they cary quite a few bugs or viruses or something like that, Dont know how the seeds got the bugs, lol.

Has Anyone heard anything about this????????

this has been discussed in significant length over at
www.bambooweb.info

It is illegal to import any bamboo, in any form, unless it is done through a special permit process, and then put under quarantine for a year.... the bummer is that apparently there are few people with permits, and the govmt. does not readily issue new ones. fortunately, it seems that most of the people with permits are part of the American Bamboo Society, so that is how we get new plants into the USA.

hope that helps some!

I planted some moso seeds that I got and only got about 3 good plants out of 100 seeds. I got them in 2003. One of them is really taking off and is the stronger of the 3. It had tremendous rhizome growth this past year and I expect it to start putting up more culms every year.

That is Awsome, Evan!

I have a miniscule moso that I got from a friend who sprouted some from seed, and another that was an almost dead 1 gal from another friend, who was going to toss it out! the 1 gal has been in the ground for a year now, and is doing quite well, threw up some small shoots last spring, and I am hoping for more this year..... Neat plants, but dang, it takes a long time for them do do anything!

best of luck with yours!

well to spread out my test, I purchased quite a few seeds from a few different ppl. (more of a test to see who has better seeds) altogether I have about 1000 seeds. For legal reason they are all domestic seeds..... lol

ill see how they turn out of the year, should have a small green house up in running by the end of this month..

in a few months if I get good plant rate, ill take then to AL.

from what i have heard on bamboo seed, the quicker you get them planted the better. the best germination rate is with fresh seed, and for some reason, many species decline in germination rate quite rapidly.

best of luck with your little guys! I hope you get a moso with Akebono style leaves out of it all! That would make your day.... and fourtune!

Akebono style leaves are a form of varigation. Pleoblastus akebono is a good example. it is white fading to green. I have never heard of this in a moso, so if you happend upon it, it would be worth a ton of money in divisions once you had the plant established. I imagine you would have people beating down your door to get what ever you were willing to sell, at pretty much whatever price you wanted. Take a look at what some of the "rare" bamboos in nursery circles go for, and think that many of these are pretty well established in the sense that most boo nurserys have them, and have parent plants that are big enought to do quite a few divisions off of each year to supply their customers.

I've got a ton of Moso and Heteroclada from there. I've got lots of pots that are going to be 2 years old this May.

Weird that they would do that. The moso do create some weird mold when I would grow them on wet paper towels. Otherwise, they have been fine.

Well i just got a HUGe lot of MOSO seeds will see how they sprout, this is a first time venture for me and i have nearly a thousand seeds hoping to get at least a few plants started will take any advice as to whats best way to make them grow =) I live in OK so i hope they will do well. But if a large number of them germinate i will be more than glad to sell healthy starts (sorry for ignorance on the horticultural terms =)
