I am new to growing bamboo, but am interested in trying to grow Moso in Tallahassee. I am told, however, that it won't do very well here. But when I explore the information I have available I am still not sure why it wouldn't do well. Is it just not cold enough in the winter?
About a decade ago I lived in Kyushu Japan and there were groves of very large bamboo. At the time I didn't know the differences between them, but in reviewing some of my photos the larger ones seem to be Moso (though I am not entirely sure). My only point with this is that the climate of Tallahassee, from what I can tell so far, is rather similar to at least coastal Kyushu. It is incredibly hot and humid in the summers. The only difference is that Kyushu is probably a bit colder in the winters.
Has anyone tried growing Moso in Northern Florida? What is its preferred climatic range?
Thank you,
Michael
