Can anyone tell me what the largest species of Bamboo I can grow down in S.C.. I want to plant one of the giant types. I want a running type and a clumping type, one of each. I want for it to be the one most desired for construction purposes. That's the main 2 things. The biggest I can grow here and the best for construction purposes. I see a lot of seeds being offered on ebay of the Giant Type, both clumping and running but I would like someone with knowledge to help me in chooseing one of each. Thank You, charndannio

You should be able to grow just about any type of bamboo there in SC. In giant timber types, I would suggets Giant Timber (Bambusa oldhamii), which is a clumper. And for a runner, try Japanese Timber bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides), or Henon (Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'). These are some of the largest types of bamboos that there are.

From what I can see those handle zones 7-9. I am in zone 7, but I have also heard that they may not handle extended cold snaps well. Would they be recommended in Northern Alabama? I have a low valley location I am considering.

Go to jmbamboo.com then go to giant & timber bamboo and see which one you like the best. Probably for you would be the japenese giant timber or the moso. There is whole bunch of other sites like that one, you just have to go to google and search,"bamboo nursery".

I hope this helps:)!!!
