Out of all of the boos in the collection, only one seems to have any issues at all durring winter chills- my poor little Bambusa multiplex "fernleaf". it was killed to the ground last year, its first year, re grew, shorter, but bushier, by the end of summer, and with the temps dipping into the 20's lately, is looking unhappy again..... I piled a nice much pile in a doughnut around it, and put a glass aquarium over the plant itself, sort of a make shift cold frame idea. the question is how will it react? I am curious about 2 things- day temps are going to get much warmer now, under the glass, and second, the humidity under there is going to go through the roof as well. Any thoughts on if either of those would be worse than the temps we are having? my other to Bambusa sp. are doing well, a tiny fern, and a alphonse karr.
lets hear your thoughts!

Last year was colder than this one here in OR, and almost all of my boos were knocked on their butts with 15 degree lows here for several weeks. This winter is warmer, and they are doing better.
Most of the Bambusas are going to struggle here. My Oldhamii's do not like even this mild cold weather (25 low this year so far). I have them in a greenhouse now, along with my Alphonse Karr, that absolutely hates living here in the winter. Oddly, the square and marbled types I got from our friend in Merlin are doing well here. As is Candy Stripe, which is said not to love cold, but is doing fime here this year.

Weird! my Alphonse has a new shoot, and all seems to be going well with it, the tiny fern is doing well too.... the only one who is really unhappy is the fernleaf.
guess all we can go is wait and hope for warmer temps!

Well, a new shoot on that one will likely abort it if it gets too cold. Even my aureas have aborted their late fall shoots now. Any new growth that has not hardened off and full set with freezing temps like we have had this week and they will die off. Keep it warm if you want to keep the shoots.
