Where would I find some of the Giant Moso that gets so huge? Is this the largest type of bamboo that will grow here in the US? If not then what is the largest type of bamboo that there is in the states? I live down in SC and would like to know if the Giant kind will grow here. And if so where can I get some from. Thanks, Charlene

Hi Charlene,
for giant moso - there is an event sponsored by the Southeast Chapter of the American Bamboo Society in Anderson, South Carolina that you would really enjoy attending:
Saturday March 1, 2008
Moso grove cleanup at the Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson
The annual Moso grove cleanup at the Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, SC is planned for 9 a.m., Saturday March 1, 2008. Gloves, loppers, saws and shovels are very helpful. Poles and plants are available to participants.

How many plants are you able to get at one of these Grove Cleanups? Just one or many? Thanks, Charlene

I've never been to the Anderson Grove Grooming event - but if you want to dig plants you should plan to bring dirt to fill up your hole. The bamboo borders a cemetery and the event is an "Annual Grove Grooming Event", so the property needs to be left in an appropriate manner. You might contact Michele-Marie von Bergen (colt_ar6920@yahoo.com) with such questions. She is the Southeast Chapter President.
Patience is helpful when starting bamboo - as the following slogan is often used:
The first year it sleeps
The second year it creeps
The third year it leaps...

Yeah, patience indeed. I've been waiting since October 2005 for mine to start leaping. Finally in 2008, it looks like it will happen!
I wonder how much you could get there. I personally would try to take 4-8 small rhizome cuttings, hopefully some with a small culm attached.

There are some people who sell them online. Here is one. I know there are a few others. I've gotten a few from these places, very easy.
