I like to go down near the coast in SC. There are many small groves of bamboo growing around here in the area I live in. The groves being here was blamed on one man who brought back bamboo when he was overseas in WWII. He started a small grove and then his friends got plants from him and started their own groves and so on. Since the 1940's there has gotten to be many groves in my area. People around here hate the stuff now since it tries to take over any plot of land. They try to get rid of it any way they can. I have recently started harvesting it and am selling some of it on ebay. I want to start my own grove or small plantation with 25 acres of land that I have. Anyway I have access to a lot of mature bamboo. I want to learn how to preserve it and go into the business of selling bamboo. I need to learn all that I can about the plant. I really enjoy working with it and have fell in love with the plant. I need to know how to preserve or treat large amounts of it, quickly. I have been reading all that I can about how to do this. Does anyone here sell the poles for profit and if so how do you treat large amounts of it at a time. I have read about the borax but that seems like a lot of trouble knocking out the center and filling up each individual plant. I was wondering if there is anyway to put a large amount in a big drum of some kind and put it under high pressure to drive the borax into the plant in a short amount of time. Has anyone ever tried this. Any help would very much be appreciated. Thanks, Charndannio

Indoor Bamboo

Just like you, my husband and I are wanting to grow bamboo as nursery on our 15 acre lot. He loves planting, while I tend to like indoor plants including bamboo to be grown indoor. I want to grow bamboos outside to be harvested as an indoor plant. I will harvest them at a stage where they look very good (probably 6 ft.) and sell them as indoor plant. I am positively (90%) going through with this plan.. and very excited. Another reason is to compensate, make use of the 15 acre lots we bought 2 years ago. The association fee is $400/year and land tax is now $1,000.00/yr. We have to save $$ monthly, to pay for these dues.

Bamboos that are indoors are mostly seen at malls and Interior decorators pay $$ for this specimen. I am also a web designer, so right now.. I'm building a site, collecting photos of bamboos as interior for house or commercial.

Do you know the type of bamboo you have in SC? If you have any of these plants/descriptions, please let me know.

Phyllostachys aurea 'Golden Bamboo'. This beautiful bamboo for indoor use can be trimmed to any height from a couple feet high up to 16 feet. This pruning of the tops to a desired height is only necessary once a year.

Phyllostachys nigra Henon 'Giant Gray' culms are gray blue with beautiful dense foliage of green leaves. This graceful giant is a variety of Black bamboo that reaches a height of 65 feet and 4.5 inches in diameter when planted in the ground. This makes a great house plant in containers but will not reach mature size.

That's a lot to pay for just having the land. You're right I would put it to work for me. How are you going to go about planting 15 acres of bamboo? That's what I am trying to find out now. I was told I would have to plant the whole root ball of the type that I have in order to get it to survive. That's an awfull lot of work and expense. I hope there is some shortcuts I could take. Even if I get the bamboo free there is no way I can plant 25 acres of bamboo in this way. I have some pictures posted on this site in the (BAMBOO ID) forum, take a look at them. That's the kind of bamboo that I have access to around here. Nobody has contacted me yet about the kind that it is but I am hoping someone will know and let me know. I am only interested in the type that you can sell the poles out of. So the type that people mostly desire for buildings, fences, crafts and such is the type I want to try and grow. Do you have any ideas in this area? Thanks, Charlene

Are you selling live plants on e-bay or the harvested and processed.
I am wanting to start a small, very small stand in my yard. Any small amount for sale? Need a quick privacy fence for hiding me in my hottub--Lost my tree in a storm. Thanks!
