bamboo pencil

Hi I'm new working with bamboo. I have some growing in my backyard and thought I could make some interesting things with it. So I tried making a pencil. (I cut a pencil sized piece and just kind of sharpened it) but everytime, after a few days the bamboo would just dry out...
Is there some sort of way for preventing this from happening?

Hi Maria,
It sounds like you are using bamboo that is too young and has not had time to develop its strength.

Try using a more mature piece of bamboo. Were you putting a piece of 'lead' inside the bamboo?
