hi all!
i am new to this forum and kindly excuse me if i ask obvious questions.
i wanted to know that how can i make hinges (like in doors, etc) using only bamboo or cane or jute ropes? i am trying to make a rack which has movable shelves (they move 90 degrees around a hinge). any suggestions or links to sites, kindly let me know... im in a slight hurry! :(

Hi priyam,
This sounds like a challenging but feasible project.
Do you have any sketches or drawings of what you have in mind?
You can upload them with your post.
(Use 'Manage Attachment' link below post message text box to upload attachments.
This would help give us a better idea of what you want to do.

Cheers,
Mark

hi mark, thanks for your reply!
i ve attached 2 rough sketches, that show what im trying to work on... i think i am having slight trouble deciding what material to use for the hinges? for a mock-up prototype i used wool thread, but that is not too strong. i was wondering if i can use thin cane strips (the ones used to bind joints in cane furniture also)...i tried to use jute rope also.... but i am not too sure wether that will take all the wear and tear.
if u have any suggestions... or if u think somethings will not work in my current design , then i wud be glad to hear! :)

thank you!

you could use a couple of pieces of hollow culm, glue pieces or otherwise fasten them to opposite sides, then use a slightly smaller piece as a "pin" just like a door hinge. not sure if it would work for your application, but thought I would put in my 2 cents!

Use one full length cane whose outside diameter will allow it to be placed inside the full length, hollowed-out outer cane.

The inside cane will have dowels of wood or 'boo installed and which will extend through 90 degree slots in the outer cane, thus allowing it to swing.

It will still wear down the slots over time, but will stand up better than canes rotating within the binder cane which seems to be how your sketch indicates the canes being attached.

Sorry I don't have a sketch to illustrate. If this is too confusing, let me know and I'll sketch it out.
