Hi, Folks:

A classical/pop guitarist by profession, I recently moved to the Nashville area. Land and housing are so much cheaper here that I now putting in close to an acre of timber bamboo, primarily P bambusoides.

In the hopes that this plant will survive up against the south side of my house, which has a lot of crawl space, I am also trying one of these:

"Pleioblastus hindsii 'Yasui' A new introduction from Japan with distinctive, stiffly upright leaves and a handsome upright form. Excellent for screening. Has edible shoots of outstanding flavor. Grows to 18' tall, is cold hardy to 0 degrees, and resistant to salt air."

I spent about 3 years studying at the Ali Akbar College of Music, and I briefly tried to play one of the bamboo flutes. I had little success, and I'm already a professional classical guitarist and vocalist. At one point, we need to throw in the towel on adding skills that require such dedication!

The flute was lovely, and the builder was another student and friend from Italy, so I hope that he will visit me someday, and I hope that I will have a few culms of value. I am putting an open but covered informal concert pavillion deep in my grove, and "world" flute concerts would be a great addition, I wish I could hurry up that bamboo! But, I still want to network even now, especially with a Shakuhachi player. Does anyone know of such a person(s) near Nashville? Perhaps I'll be able to harvest a few Madake culms of the right diameter as the grove develops--as long as I know exactly what size is needed!

All my best,

Mischa Z
