View Full Version : Rhizome Bud Dissection Closeup

I dug up a rhyzome that had wondered too far. I cut about 4 feet off of it, then as I was slicing it up, mulching it back into the garden, I took this piece, cut it in half, then photographed it.

This is from yellow groove of course.

It's intersting to see how the bud is practically one with the Rhyzome. It also has a large area of attachment to the rhyzome, so it can supply nutrients when it shoots.

Yep, that's an interesting observation Clint!
I guess this is also why side-branching rhizomes can be of equal size to the "mother" rhizome.

This is unlike as with a tree roots, where if one cuts off a large tree root, other roots will grow from behind this point but these side roots will be smaller in diameter than the original root.

Also another difference is that tree roots can grow larger in diameter as they get older, but a rhizome will never get any larger in diameter than the size it first grew.
