Finally, our Simonii puts out a new culm!
It has been in mostly sun since it's been in the ground, and has not shown much varigation since purchase. This new bit has come up in overcast and is showing varigation on the(help me here Mark!) culm sheath leaves?

We have forcasts of cloudy skies in the near future, I'm curious how the new leaves will come out!

"Technically" I believe the leaves at the end of the culm sheath are called sheath blades but sheath leaves works for me too. :)

I recollect that you mentioned your original planting was Pleioblastus simonii 'Variegatus', which is known to be very unstable, often reverting to the species form.
However it can still produce culms with variegated leaves, so it will be interesting to see what these shoots turn out to be.

PS Our Pl. simonii shoots in May here in Central Texas. It's amazing the difference location makes for shoot emergence.
We've had copious amounts of rain this year which can sometimes cause a secondary albiet smaller flush of late risers.

Blades...that sounds better.

I've also noticed a secondary culming in Fall from most of the bamboo here. The new fall shoots usually grow to two feet or less before the frost kills them.
