I recieved some of this bamboo but the person I got it from had no idea what kind it was. The picture looks to be of younger shoots so I'm not sure if anyone will be able to identify it. I would appreciate anyone who can help me out with this.

Hi dawgonit,
Because some culms in the pic have sections in which the internodes are compressed and distorted ...
I would say that this bamboo is Phyllostachys aurea (http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/showgallery.php?cat=503) (pics at the gallery Bamboo Flora)
It's also called Golden Bamboo and sometimes Fishpole Bamboo.

Me and the Missus have an acre+ grove of this bamboo species, (it came with the house), and make extensive use of the harvest. :)

I'm glad to see how well it is growing in your area.
Do show more pics when you can.
Mark

Is the aurea in the photo above growing in Ohio?

No not yet. It is a risk but I got it from a friend and am hoping it will make it. It is rated to 5 degrees so we will see what happens.

I suspected that the photo had to be zone 7 or warmer. I'm a bit warmer than Columbus OH and I am in the process of removing all of my forms of aurea, it just is not hardy and is thus far the only one (two counting the Koi form) of my 140+ species that I am digging out due to poor hardiness. If you have only a small space, you might wish to consider a hardier species, mine is still under 6 feet after 5 years but spreading and taking up too much space for a runt Phyllostachys. You might enjoy container growing it and if you want more you are welcome to come here and dig out my aurea!

Im hoping for just a barrier. 5 or 6 feet would probably be good. We are actually already planning on moving. I just want to get as many species as possible to see what will work so that I can trnsfer the good things to our new place.
