Hi Rog,
Good to hear from you again, and great to see your new pics of bamboo shooting in your garden!

The snake appears to be a Garter snake, a species of the genus Thamnophis. (... but correct me if I'm wrong)

I have a healthy respect, and keep a good distance from snakes, but as Garter snakes are not poisonous and help keep pesky bug populations down in the garden, I don't mind them. )

From this site about ...
Garter Snakes - An overview of their natural history and care in captivity.
http://www.anapsid.org/gartcare.html

Garters, due to their small size, are quick to heat up and cool down. Like most reptiles, garters warm up by basking in the sun. It may be on a rock or perhaps on a branch... ... like bamboo, or other suitable perch if available.
