Hi

I just really started getting into flute making. Some of my favorite sounding flutes are the Baroque Style and Renaissance sounding flutes.
Has anyone created these type of flutes using bamboo? If so could use some info ? :)

There is a fair bit involved in getting the sounds of these instruments correct. In both cases the bore is critical. For Renaissance style flutes a parallel bore is important, for Baroque style flutes a reverse conical bore is needed. In both cases you will need to ream the inside of the bamboo to get the profile correct. The thickness of the walls is also a factor. As instrument making progressed walls became thinner, holes larger and the sound became brighter as a consequence. The relationships of these factors is well documented. google flute hole placement or similar and you will find what you are looking for.

Please do not think that the choice of material determines the sound. It is the bore shape, wall thickness, placement and size of finger holes that matters. That said I reckon bamboo is an attractive material for these types of instruments. Good luck

Sebastiaan,

The reverse conical bore is interesting stuff. I am having a hard time finding a reamer for this purpose. Do you have a supplier that I can contact or is it a home made device?
