Its been awhile. I mostly been a flute player and collector but now I recently got the making flutes bug. I started recently trying making Native style flutes but still love bamboo flutes. Eventually I would like to get into growing my own supply but don't have a lot of room for now. Just wondering does anyone out there sell blank pieces of bamboo ? or can you give me hints on where I can find a good place to buy from ?

i just started making bamboo flutes...using root end pieces sold for making japanese shakuhachi flutes.
my source is frank's cane & rush supply...714.847.0707
they carry both black bamboo and a natural colored of unknown name...39 inches x about 1.5 inches outside dia.
...pretty nice root ends to my novice eyes.
since i'm new to flute making in bamboo, i have no idea what the quality of the bamboo is, but i've made 4 flutes so far and have managed to seal and wrap the bamboo in time to avoid spreading splits...and they sound like angels.

I'd also brought from Frank. Its not a bad deal at $7.95 each. However I feel the diameter is slightly too big. I will request for smaller diameter blanks on my next order.

Henry, not sure if you remember a post you made in 2005 but it was about bamboo in/around Rutgers. How did that turn out? I'm looking to cultivate some for myself as I'm a newbie to this.
If there is anyone else out there able to provide assistance I'm all ears.
TIA

Ron,
the boos are ph. nuda. there r 2 locations by Rutgers U in New Brunswick, NJ. a small grove is on the roadside right off NJ Pike 95 Exit 9 (Rt 18) as you follow the exit into Rt 18. You'll see the big buildings on the right. As soon as you past the buildings the bamboo is on your 11:00 o'clock eye sight. you have to turn right into the parking lot and then walk to the boo, no permission needed. this is the map link.

The Rutgers U grove is in the Rutgers college of agriculture. If you the same rt 18 up to Rt1 south you'l see the Rutgers U all around you. The bamboo garden is in the agri garden on the oppsite side of rt 1 (N bound) so you'll have to make a U turn. They have 2 large size groves. Stop by the administration buliding and ask for permission and direction to the groves.
There are 2 more groves along 95. One is 21 miles north of Baltimore, public grove walk to from a shopping center, primiarily moso. The other is in the backyard a house in Oxon, Md., I think the specie is moso/madake...I have not dug any in this location since I didn't bring any tools when I was there in June.
Good luck and let me know if you have more questions.

Would anyone happen to have information on similar groves in the midwest? Specifically the Missouri/ Illinois region?

Ron,
I am in Scarsdale, just north of the Bronx.
The grove on rt 18 is pretty close to you. There is a small stream on the down side of the grove so there is no problem if you need to keep the root ball wet coming home. Good luck and enjoy your dig.
