BAMFEST 2006 - Northeast India - 3rd BAMFEST 2006 - 1st Announcement (edited)

The much awaited event on Bamboo originally set to be held in Agartala from 5th-12th November 2006, has been rescheduled for 16-18 December 2006. The event is being organized by the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre, Guwahati in association with the Government of Tripura and is sponsored by the North Eastern Council under the North Eastern Regional Bamboo Mission (NERBaM). The BAMFEST 2006 at Agartala will be the third in a row. The previous BAMFEST were held in Shillong and in Guwahati in 2005 and 2003 respectively. This event has been accorded the recognition by the World Bamboo Organization (WBO) as an International Event on Bamboo and will receive widespread international participation of Scientists, Technologists, Entrepreneurs, Govt Policy Makers, Artisans, Bamboo Enthusiasts etc.

The previous BAMFEST in 2005 and 2003 has been successful in registering the attention of a wide range of experts on the applications of Bamboo on the sustainable development of livelihoods world wide as well as suitability of Bamboo in diverse industrial applications.

The theme of the BAMFEST 2006 at Agartala is Bamboo Cluster Development and Market Access . Accordingly the event will host several discussion and brain storming sessions on ways and means to introduce Bamboo as livelihood development opportunities at cluster levels throughout the North East and India. There will be a host of events during the eight day BAMFEST at Agartala. It will provide access to the general population in terms of information and first hand exposure to developments taking place in the fields of Bamboo related industrial applications. Besides being a platform for exchange among Policy Makers, Entrepreneurs, Artisans, Technologists, Scientists, the BAMFEST will also host Bamboo Food Festival, Music Festival, BAM-EXPO an exhibition on Bamboo handicrafts and industrial products, Film shows on Bamboo etc.

The BAMFEST 2006 will coincide with a Ten-Day International Training on Bamboo Industrial Processing and Handicrafts. The Bamboo Industrial Processing and Handicrafts training programme will draw participants from Latin America, Africa, South East Asian and neighbouring countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh etc. The BAMFEST 2006 will be a prelude to the VIII World Bamboo Congress which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November 2007. The 3rd BAMFEST will host technical seminars focusing on management, processing and technologies of bamboo resources. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India will facilitate in holding the BAMFEST 2006.

It is the objective of popularizing and creating awareness related to Bamboo's role in wood substitution, protecting the environment of the planet and its major role in creating sustainable livelihood opportunities, employment generation and entrepreneurship.

The BAMFEST will be held in every State Capitals of the North East in the future. The North East has a special significance with respect to Bamboo, since about 60 percent of the Bamboo reserves of India and 20 percent of the world are available in the North Eastern Region. More than 100 species of the Bamboo are naturally available in this region. Majority of the species have various applications in the industry, such as in manufacture of Bamboo Floor Boards, Bamboo Mat Corrugated Sheets, Bamboo Mat Boards, Bamboo Ply Boards, Bamboo Particle Boards etc.
Different applications such as Agarbatti Sticks, Bamboo Mats, Bamboo Slivers and Strips are manufactured at the cluster levels by the primary processors in the N E Region. Information about the various processing parameters, technologies, marketing arrangements, entrepreneurship development, bamboo based cluster developments will be available during the event in Agartala, Tripura.

There will be special focus on traditional bamboo processing skills of the major ethnic communities and how it is connected with the socio-economic- cultural lives of people in the NE Region. The 3rd BAMFEST 2006 at Agartala will also include field visits, whereby interested participants will be taken to various centres for showing the active centres of bamboo related crafts and industrial processing within the NE region.

The registration of the BAMFEST is open for Policy Makers, Academicians, Government Departments/Agencies, Entrepreneurs, Technologists, Scientists, Research and Development Institutions, Industry, Business Houses, Media, Technology Forums, Bamboo Enthusiasts/Hobbysts and the general public.

The Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre which was set up in the year 2000 as part of Cane and Bamboo Technological Upgradation and Networking Project of United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), DST, Govt of India and UNIDO. From 2004, the CBTC is implementing the North Eastern Regional Bamboo Mission (NERBaM), under which training programmes on industrial processing and industrial applications of Bamboo have been held. The CBTC as part of its mandate has also disseminated technologies under Technology Transfer agenda to various enterprises in the North East and is actively imparting its services to several State Governments in the North Eastern Region on Bamboo based livelihood development programmes. Several Secondary Bamboo Processing Units have come up in the North East which manufactures export oriented Bamboo Blinds, Bamboo Floor Boards etc based on technological inputs received from the CBTC.

I would like to remind you of the upcoming 3rd BAMFEST 2006 at Agartala in the State of Tripura, India, on 16th -18th December 2006.
This event on bamboo has received the accord of World Bamboo Organization (WBO) as an International Event and will be a prelude to the 8th World Bamboo Congress (http://www.bamboocraft.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2074) to be held in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil in November 2007. Several of our Directors of the World Bamboo Organization (WBO) will be present.
The BAMFEST is organized by the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre and the Government of Tripura, and the event is sponsored by the North east Council, Government of India

The theme for the 3rd BAMFEST is "Bamboo Cluster Development and Market Access". The event will be comprised of a BAMEXPO which will be an exhibition of bamboo based industrial and handicraft products. Other events during the eight day programme at Agartala will be Field Visits to the Artisan Clusters, Cultural events, Games and Sports , Seminars/Presentations, Interactive Sessions, Essay Writing and Painting Competitions etc. All the events/activities planned for the BAMFEST will have its central theme of raising awareness about the economic possibilities and livelihood opportunities attached with systematic utilization of the bamboo resources in the North Eastern India and also in the larger context, globally.
