Here's a low-tech method of closing the gap of a cracked bamboo.
It can also be used on a larger scale for tightening bundled bamboo...
Materials needed:
- a length of strong cord, with a loop at each end, length sufficient to wrap around the split bamboo.
- 2 sticks of stout bamboo or whatever.
Wrap the cord around the split bamboo, insert the two bamboo sticks in the loops.
Use other end of bamboo sticks as handles and follow as below:

Note that if the bamboo is very brittle, a crack may form elsewhere if it is compressed too tightly together.
Take it slowly, and when the crack has closed enough, wrap strong string or wire arounf the closed crack before releasing crack closer.
Though it's possible for one person to perform the crack closing, by securing handles of crack closer with cord, while wrapping closed crack with string/wire, this is one operation where it is easier to have someone else wrap the string/wire around the closed crack while the other person holds the crack closer in a tight position before releasing. ;)
