I have more pictures of this bamboo and I am going to this place this weekend to dig up some division of this and I would like to know what kind they are, they are no more than 1 and half inch diameter and the ones exposed to the sun has the yellow culms, the owner told me where he got them from, the culms are 2-3 inches thick!

Thank you in advance

Hi Rog,
Are any other Phyllostachys species shooting in this region at this time?

Is it one of the earlier shooting species..

First guess ... Is it Phyllostachys bissetii ?

Hello Mark,

I drove passed this nice property one day last week and saw a nice bush on the hill side of the property and he has a lot of broomstick on the left side of the property, I woke up in the middle of the night and realized those were bamboo shoots!! the next day I took my wife to that place, they were all mowed down by the owner! but the huge grove of bamboo still there so I took some picture of them, then the owner shown up and took me to the back side of the house and those new shoots were all there, I'd made friend with this property owner and got his permission to go dig up some tomorrow! I will take some more picture tomorrow before and after I dig up those bamboos! all I know is this is a VERY aggressive running bamboo all new culms are green and the ones that exprosed to the sun are yellow...

My first year P Nigra has new shoots in my yard I took a picture of them last week and today they are already about 3' tall and my P Aurea has 5 big shoots!

Here is my black bamboo shoot:

this is the P Aurea shoots picture:

Thank you for the reply Mark

I thought those were either Phyllostachys bambusoides Allgold or Golden Golden ? the reason I think of them because of the yellow culms on the matured plants... they are not Aureas because they don't have the compressed node on the bottom of any culms, I am still a newbie :)

Why do you think they are Phyllostachys bissetii?

Have a good day

Hi Rog, your bamboos look like they're settling in just fine!
Good to see the new shoots.
Look out that squirrells or rabbits don't get 'em!

Re ID? ...

I doubt that it is a bambusoides species because they are later shooters.
Ours has not emerged yet (April14) but will any day.

Many species culms will become golden if exposed to open sunlight.
See what color they are in the interior of the grove.

Phyllostachys bissetii (http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/showgallery.php?cat=594) (pics at Bamboo Flora) is my first guess because it's an earlier shooter and the culm sheaths are a greenish color when they emerge.

I've got better bissetti shoot pics somewhere but can't find them right now.

See, in this pic ...
Phyllostachys bissetii culm sheath - outer side - auricles
http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/data/594/thumbs/Pbsstii-913.JPG (http://www.bamboocraft.net/bamboo/showphoto.php?photo=2957)

... and check to see if the larger culm sheaths have auricles further up.

The lower sheaths won't have them, and further up the sheath it may or may not have them, then they become more frequent the further up the shoot.
When a larger shoot grows to eye height, you might see some of the auricles peeking out with the expanding sheath tips ...

Smaller sized shoots often don't have auricles.

Look forward to hearing what you find out.

All the best with your digging!

Hi Mark,

You are so right about this bamboo, after I studied your pictures and I am sure the bamboos I found in this nice gentleman's yard is the Phyllostachys bissetii !! I misunderstood him about the grove he got his bamboo, he said the grove was 2-3 times bigger than his...

I dug up about 10 divissions of Bissetiis from 2-8 culms all over 10' tall and planted in a long row about 6-8' apart and already it added the instent beauty to my yard... these bamboos are not something money can buy! even I am willing to pay for them, they will not able to mail such big plants or divission to me! or I will have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping! I will take some pictures for my new Bessetiis and post it on here...

Thank you for correctly id this bamboo, now I can have something to trade with other people for other bamboos! no wonder you are the master of bamboo!

I found another kind of bamboo in this man's property, they are about the same size, may be a bit taller, but they are much thin walled and the groves look much more slopy because of all the broken culms, and the leaves are bit bigger than the bissetii, I will send those pictures to you and please resize them for me and post it on the other thread for me ?

Thank you so very much for your help!

Hi Rog, that's great to hear about your new bamboo planting.
Re: ID ... call it luck of the drawl ;)
I'm familiar with P bissetii, having grown it in Pennsylvania.

Re: pics, I look forward to seeing them.
(We'll be introducing some new features soon in the gallery where you will be able to upload/and sort pics into albums etc ... Will let you know when)

Your other bamboo to ID has been posted in this thread (http://www.bamboocraft.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1871)

Cheers,
Mark
