This is my first post! I'm very happy to have found this site and resource. Thank you.
I'm a drummer, and I play most jazz and funk, some rock. Really everything. I've bought pre-made maple ply shells and build my own drums out of them, but I saw a bowl at the store the other day made of bamboo, and it was quite strong and stiff, like maple ply, so I thought it would be very interesting to try to build a shell using bamboo. I have a feeling that it would have good musical qualities too.
Trouble is I don't know how to go about it. I've seen bowls that were lathed out of a block of bamboo strips, and others that seem to have the grain running around the circumference rather than perpendicular and bound with some sort of lacquer or paint.
I'm looking into veneer, since that's how a traditional ply drum is built.
Any other ideas?
