Here's another interesting site, PaleoPlanet (http://p081.ezboard.com/bpaleoplanet69529), on the use of primitive technologies. The entire site, ranges from making bow drills, atlatls, archery, cooking, shelters, herbs etc., etc, use by primal and many indigenous people today. The link below will bring you to a page featuring the work of the sites founder in creating his own bamboo Native American Flutes (NAF). Nice description of his trial and error, good photos of his work.

Wow. It really is a small world! I just found this bambooforum a couple of days ago. I was spending some time today reading through the older discussions and I came across this one. PaleoPlanet is the discussion forum that I manage, and the link is to a post I made about making a NA flute (embarrassingly, my post will betray my status as a rank amateur!).
Anyway, thanks for the kind words and the link TallTree.

Hi Tom, great site!
Fresh perspectives and innovation often begins with a blank palette ... and a dose of necessity, the mother of invention.
Long live newbeism!

Greetings,
I found this group while re-working a 'Make Your Own Pan Pipes From Bamboo" workshop which I'll start teaching again in a couple of weeks.
I've been searching back-posts all night long, and when I found this thread I figured I'd go ahead and pipe up (sorry about the pun :p )
When I first started this a pan pipe workshop couple of years ago I included simple flutes as well, wasn't going to do that this time - y'all changed my mind - going to include simple and more complex flutes, incorporating PaleoPlanet's notes into my class presentation too, thank you for posting -- already had didgeridoo notes from somewhere - adding jaw harps, and several percussion instruments.
I've got a small stand of P. vivax and a couple of acres of probably some Arundinaria - USDA Zone 7a, near Chattanooga TN.
For curing I often let dry in field - quick cure for small piece is usually boiling in oil, maybe canola or corn or peanut, whatever was on sale - now I know about "drying" and "semi-drying" and "non-drying" oils - thanks again - not had any problems yet, but I'll be using a drying one from now on.
Thanks for the great database and forum :)

Hi Granger,
Glad to hear that you've found the site useful.
And good to know you're providing bamboo related workshops.
We're going to set up a place where bamboo related artisans can outline the workshops they offer, so PM/email me if you would like to be listed.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark - tried to send an email - maybe it'll get to you, I'm still learning how to use Forum tools.
