“I began the process by wondering about bamboo in basketry; now I see its influence everywhere.” Nancy Moore Bess, Bamboo in Japan, p. 11
Portland, OR — Guest curated by artist and author Nancy Moore Bess, this exhibition presents works that use bamboo as a motif or medium. The question is raised, “How does a specific media influence aesthetic decisions and determine how an artist might choose to use it in their work?”
More than twenty artists are featured in this exhibition, including Kazue Honma and Hisako Sekijima, from Japan; Jae Young Kim, from Korea; Calvin Hashimoto and Shakti Carola Navran, from Hawaii; Jasmine Strobbe and Takako Ueki, from New York; and Charissa Brock, Glenn Grishkoff, Troy Susan and Jiro Yonezawa, from Portland.
Nancy Moore Bess is an internationally known textile and bamboo craftsperson. For more than 30 years she has been creating unique baskets that reflect her research into the cross-cultural, especially Japanese, influences on her craft. Her continuing interest in multicultural art forms led her to explore the structural and aesthetic properties of bamboo. Bess lectures on basketry and bamboo around the world and is an active member of the American Bamboo Society.
Coinciding with this exhibition, Nancy Moore Bess will present “Bamboo and the Culture of Japan,” the final lecture in Contemporary Crafts’ 2006 Excellence in Craft Lecture Series. The lecture takes place on March 15th, 7pm at Pacifi c Northwest College of Art, 1241 NW Johnson.
Free to students and members of Contemporary Crafts, $5 to the general public.
There will also be an artist panel and demonstration on March 25th, 2pm at the Contemporary Crafts Museum & Gallery. Jiro Yonezawa, Charissa Brock and Troy Susan will discuss their work and reveal some of the secrets of working with bamboo.
There will also be samples of live bamboo from the Bamboo Craftsmen Company.
The event is free and open to the public. Contemporary Crafts Museum & Gallery is dedicated to innovation and excellence in craft.
Its mission is to raise awareness and appreciation of craft, to expand the audience that values craft, and to be a leader and resource for craft artists, students and the Pacific Northwest.
