2 - 5 February 2006: US/Hawaii/Kauai/The Power of Music Workshops
The Power of Music is a series of workshops designed to provide you with a unique opportunity to enjoy, study, and participate in lesser-known traditional and contemporary performing arts from diverse Asian cultures.

Each year, our series brings renowned musicians, dancers, instrument makers and related artists to Kauai from selected geographic regions in Asia to present performances and give instruction in indigenous art forms. As a workshop participant, you will have the opportunity to study and perform along with these artists. Held at Steelgrass Ranch, a meditative environment set on an eight-acre bamboo plantation on the beautiful island of Kauai, the workshops provide a stimulating setting for artistic and creative exploration.

12th February 2006: US/FL/Miami/Bamboo Building Course w/Simon Velez & Marcelo Villegas
Building Course With Simon Velez and Marcelo Villegas February 12-18, 2006
Profile: A Bamboo Construction Course will take place February 12-18 at Koolbamboo's location (28600 Old Dixie Hwy in Homestead Fl. 33033). The location is a 30-minute ride from the Miami International Airport. The idea of the course is to give students a chance to be part of a team in the building of a bamboo structure with the guidance of Simon Velez and Marcelo Villegas, who have several years of experience in this field. The course will begin officially on Monday the 13th of February 2006 and Koolbamboo will host a cocktail party on Sunday the 12th where the participants will have a chance to meet Simon Velez and Marcelo Villegas plus the other participants and staff. The plan is to build a structure as large as 1000 sq. ft. out of treated Guadua bamboo, concrete rebar and threaded rod. Simon Velez and Marcelo Villegas will predetermine the design of the structure by the first day of construction and there will be a short discussion of the methods and techniques used in traditional bamboo construction as done in Colombia. The participants will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions through out the course and there will be time at the end of days to see photographs and have general discussions about bamboo. There will be a great emphasis on safety and all necessary safety equipment will be provided for the course, however its always a good idea to have properly fitting gloves and safety glasses. The course will span over the week and on Saturday the 20th there will be a small celebration with BBQ to finish the week of activity at the building site and it will also be an open house for non-participants to view the structure. This will be one of the first of its kind in The U.S.

Instructors:

Simon Velez, an architect who has completed a number of extraordinary bamboo structures became interested in bamboo over 20 years ago and admits his previous experience with wood did not help due to the complex joinery of bamboo. His idea was to build a cantilever roof that would stand the stress of traction but found it was difficult to find a method of joinery for the hollow ends of Guadua bamboo, a material found in the Andes Mountain range. Though many trials he and his life long friend Marcelo Villegas discovered the possibility of filling the inter-node of the bamboo with concrete and encasing a threaded rod inside the inter-node. This technique made it possible to apply stresses to bamboo that had been previously unknown with this material. They have over 200 structures out of bamboo to their credit including the Zeri Pavilion in Hanover Germany, The sister structure in Manizales “Manizales Pavilion” , The C.A.R.D.E.R building in Pereira, The Alternative Cathedral in Pereira Risaralda Colombia, The Puerto Peñalisa Club and the Island Village Stage for the Bob Marley museum in Ocho Rios Jamaica. Other projects include several residences, observation towers stables and public buildings.

Marcelo Villegas has played an integral part in the development of Construction with Guadua Bamboo. A skilled craftsman, artist and builder his foundry work engineering skills are responsible for the hardware finish work and metal fixtures that make a large Guadua Bamboo structures possible. Marcelo Villegas is perhaps the most knowledgeable person on the qualities and strengths of this material. He is solely responsible for the growing popularity of Guadua bamboo through his magnificent books “Tropical Bamboo” and “New Bamboo” He has restored several ancient farm houses in his native Colombia and is well known for his Residential and Commercial building. His work shop in Manizales is a myriad of metal and wood restorations, a foundry ceramic tile factory and his priceless furniture has inspired many of those interested in the use of wood and bamboo as a combination. Marcelo Villegas has been instrumental in working with Simon Velez as consultant manufacturer and friend form the beginning of this new era in bamboo construction. One of the leading designers of his time he is dedicated to the resurrection of traditional techniques and evolving them into modern masterpieces.

Requirements: Any person interested in Bamboo Construction is welcome. Please consider that the terrain is rough and we will be working with equipment and tools so good fitting shoes work cloths and safety glasses are advised. 27 February - March 5, 2006: INBAR-CIBART
International Training Workshop on Bamboo Propagation (Sympodial), Management and Harvesting: Methods, Policy Issues and Strategies

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and the *Centre for Indian Bamboo Resource & Technology (CIBART) are jointly organizing an International Training Workshop on Bamboo Propagation, Management and Harvesting: Methods, Policy Issues and Strategies in India, 27th February to 5 March 2006. The event will be held at the Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Thrissur, Kerala State.

Bamboo and rattan (cane) play a significant role in creation of employment and income generation activities in an ecologically sustainable manner. Worldwide trade in these two commodities is currently estimated at US$14 billion per year. Several millions of people in many parts of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean depend on these plants for their livelihood and cash income. Changing socio-economic needs and development options have necessitated interventions that would reposition these traditional sectors so as to maximize benefits to the primary producers and processors, who are mostly poor farmers and artisans.

Training and capacity building are two of the tools that INBAR has been using to equip the people involved in bamboo and rattan sectors with the knowledge and skill sets needed to address the challenges posed by the 21st Century economy. INBAR has been organizing such training and capacity building workshops successfully in China, where INBAR has its headquarters, for some time now, and has started replicating them in other parts of the world.

The INBAR-CIBART training program being held at KFRI would focus on propagation and management of the sympodial type of bamboo - the type that forms clumps and grows as a cluster in one spot. A good majority of useful bamboos are sympodial and woody, and are used in industries, and by the communities and artisans for making a wide range of bamboo products. Their propagation, management and harvesting are different from those of monopodial bamboos. India has about 130 species out of which over 100 are of sympodial bamboos belonging to 18 genera.

The workshop aims to impart knowledge and skill sets to people involved in bamboo and rattan sectors, in the fields of production, processing, management, marketing and policy-making. In view of the need to maximizing resource use, the workshop will emphasize the training of trainers, besides focusing of awareness creation for optimizing income and employment generation opportunities. The training programme will involve class-room and hands-on sessions, supported by on-field activities and field visits wherever possible.

The topics for the training would include: selection of species; production of planting stock - macro and micro propagation methods; nursery establishment and management including fertilizer application; disease and pest management; plantation establishment; plantation management including, fertilizer application, disease and pest management; harvesting and post harvesting technology (preservative treatments); properties of bamboo species; economics of bamboo cultivation; application of bamboo in modern and traditional industries, etc. The training would also include sessions on policy issues.

INBAR, as an intergovernmental international agency with a focused mandate on bamboo and rattan, has accomplished considerable work in countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

* CIBART:
The Centre for Indian Bamboo Resource and Technology (CIBART) was formed in 2002, with the assistance of INBAR, as a non-profit, networked organization dedicated to development of the bamboo sector in India. It serves as a catalyst to the development of bamboo industry in India, particularly in rural areas, undertaking various collaborative livelihood development projects. CIBART consists of professionals who have been associated with the bamboo sector, bringing together respective strengths in various functional areas such as resource management, markets, setting up of enterprises, technology transfer and community development, etc.

KFRI:
The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) is an institution of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. It has been actively involved in research on bamboo taxonomy, diversity and distribution in India. KFRI has been conducting research on various aspects of forestry for the last two decades and doing considerable work on bamboo resource, utilization, management and popularization for commercial exploitation.
The resource persons for the training would be mostly scientists from KFRI.

In view of the persistent demand from various quarters, INBAR and CIBART will be jointly holding international and national training and capacity building workshops in India from 2005 onwards. This is in line with INBAR's commitment to its member countries during the Council meeting held in Beijing in March 2005.
