Hi all! I am new around here and already full of questions...

Concerning Chapter 6 "The Masacre at the Two Pines" and Chapter 8 " The cruel tutelage of Pai Mei" in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, I would like to ask you if you happen to know what sort of flute is Bill playing. It is clear that it is a chinese flute, but what sort of flute. My novice assumption is that it is a an ancient xiao flute with 3 finger holes (I may be terribly wrong).
Please guide me. I would like to know everything about crafting and playing this flute for I love the way it sounds. Tx.

Can you post a photo or sound clip?

This may take a little while, but I will try to cut that particular scene. Kill Bill is a masterpiece by Tarantino. You should see this movie.

This is smt that ressembles that flute. Except for the fact that this one has extra holes.

Hi Pai Mei,
Sorry I can't help with your question about the flute in Tarantino's movie ...

Flutes are not my bamboo forte, but I love to listen to the music of bamboo.

I began a google search on 3 hole flutes and I found a site about another type, the Fujara flute.

See New Thread ...

Pai Mai, you got me go out to rent and watched "Kill Bill I an II". The name "Pai Mai" means "white eyebrows" as you will notice Pai Mei's eyebrows are white. He was a real life kung-fu character who created "Pai Mei Pai".

Bill's flute is a long Chinese/Japanese flute which can be used as a walking or fighting stick. It has 6 finger holes.

I have a few long moso bamboo blanks that are over 36 inches long in which I can make into long flutes simular to Bill's. Just a thought.

Hi PAI MEI
" Buna Ziua " :) am fost si eu in buch un pic(mai mult in cluj) si fac fluieri bambu.

i dont think the flute in kill bill is actually a historically authentic flute at all. in other words it was just made for the movie.

i've seen Many flutemakers selling "kill bill " flutes now on ebay and other places after the film came out. henry lee linked to a few.

This is an old thread, so hopefully somebody's still interested...

This question was brought up on the Musical Instrument Makers Forum, as well. Here's the link:
http://www.mimf.com/cgi-bin/WebX?50@76.LQ2iaVpht4g.1@.1dcf7387

The first two replies to the question on that forum include links to a picture of David Carradine (aka "Bill") playing the flute with his band, as well as an interview someone found where Carradine talks about the flute... I believe he called it a "Sonora," but I couldn't find much other information about it. I think it's true that it's not really a "traditional" instrument in Japan. (However, it was NOT made specially for the film, as you'll read in the interview. Carradine bought it for himself at an earlier time, only to decide later with Tarantino that they wanted to use it in the film. Carradine is apparently quite an accomplished musician in his own right).

Here's the link for the interview, which is worth the read for the flute parts:
http://www.reelmoviecritic.com/rmc/Interviews%202004/david_carradine.htm

Make sure to check out the MIMF link too, since further down in the thread some flutemakers discuss how it could be made (a little bit on removing nodes... although you can probably find more about it on THIS forum).

BTW, I love the flute scene in that movie. Wish I could remember the sound of that flute. This is getting me in the mood to go rent it again...
