Hi! I thank you for your feedback Mark. I'm being very cautious about planting bamboo in the ornamental fashion I mentioned in an earlier post. After continued research, I've abandoned the idea of using a trashcan for a barrier. I still want to try planting phyllostachys aurea, in a small, contained plot limited to a few culms. These culms, maybe 5, I would maintain as if they were a multistem tree. I'm considering now planting in a container instead of in the ground. I'm thinking about a whiskey barrell.
Does anyone have any ideas on this use? Also, would wood make a suitable barrier?
Thanks again.

A a few things to think about with containers.
They dry out quicker than in ground and are not very insulated. So the rhizomes will freeze before they would in the ground, if low temperatures are of concern where you are.
I am trying food grade 55 gal barrels cut in half and sunk into the ground. They are much heavier duty than normal garbage cans. I cut out a portion in the center of the botton to provide drainage and lined the bottom and underneath with gravel. I expect that I will have to divide more than I like, but I think this method will reard the escapees. This is an experiment so I can not attest to its effectiveness. If it fails, I'll warn all.

I definitely wouldn't sink the whisky barrel. Above ground, you would see when rhizomes escape.--Tom
