Can you name this bamboo species?
Grown in Guatemala and collected by Gabor, each length of these bamboo samples is one single internode, with the nodes at each end, measuring up to 5 feet (150+ cm) in length!

I took these pics a while ago, jotted down some details, which were promptly lost! - hoping to contact Gabor again soon, and will get some more info, especially on culm diameter and wall thickness, and maybe pics of the growing plants.

Oh, my God, this is amazing. 5 Feet internode length, that is unheard of. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

some responses from another forum i posted this to ~
--------
Schizostachyum jaculans, Schiz. lima, and Schiz. sp. 'Murray
Island' all have very long internodes, around three feet in length.....a
possible match??
Nodes can be elongated during growth, ie., by starting with a bamboo that normally likes full sun, then plant it under the shade of tall trees. The bamboo will grow/stretch taller than normal trying to get more sun, and thus grow to a taller than normal height for the species, but the culms will usually be thinner walled. (these walls appear quite thick still!)

Thanks for the info. I am a bamboo flute player and interested in the art of bamboo flute making. So, thin wall is a big plus. Long internodes is awesome. With these two characteristics, these culms are ideal for making bamboo flutes. Are any of these specimen available in the US, either culms or live plants? Just curious.

Yes,I want some of that!! There's lots of instruments I could do with such huge internodes...but what is the internal diameter?

I've not been able to contact Gabor, as he travels frequently and may be in Honduras, where they are now growing this bamboo species on a small farm at about 5000ft / 1500M elevation.
...which brings up the question of whether altitude + tropical conditions are necessary to grow very long internoded bamboo ...
(These conditions do not exist in the USA, with the exception of Hawaii)
See this posting about ... Bamboo with long internodes: Schizostachyum grande (?) (http://www.bamboocraft.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1505)

One of my workers have tried to plant these in his backyard, But the internodal length does not reach 1 meter. It is longer than any other species, but not as long as when it grows in the wild. One thing for sure, the bamboo grows in high altittude places and a little distance from water.
Regarding the wall thickness and internal diameter of Gabor's bamboo ...

Because the samples were cut at the node, I wasn't able to get a precise measurement of their wall thickness.
A guesstimate ... 3-5mm.
The internal diameter of the samples were approx 3cm.

It is interesting to hear that the bamboo is planted on a farm. In Malaysian standard, a bamboo farm is at least 100 acres.
Regarding the wall thickness, the maximum that I have found is 5mm. Diameter wise, depends on whether it is often cut or not. The less attended ones, may only have 1cm diameter. However, those that is attended frequently, can grow up to 9 or 10 cm in diameter.

Hi Abu,
Thanks for this information! Hopefully one of these days we can find out if this is the same Genus and species as yours, as there are a number of varieties.
When does your bamboo produce new shoots?
Is it too late this year to take photos of the new shoots?
If you can get pictures of the growing bamboo, we'd love to see them, and maybe we can eventually learn how to ID this group of long internoded bamboos.

Here if someone lived in the city and bought a small acerage of land in the countryside to make a living from it, they might call it a farm, which is really only a homestead. 'Real' farms are much bigger :)

See Forum - Bamboo Sources Wanted > Sources for long internode bamboo? (http://www.bamboocraft.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1655)
---------------------
I began culmpiling a list of long internode bamboo species a while back, and now it's lost in the depths of my computer ... may have to start afresh.
I would have pursued this project earlier but have been unsuccessful at finding any bamboo species or materials in the US to photograph and evaluate, with internode lengths more then 20-24 inches / 50-60 cm.
We will need assistance from our international members.
Krissana do you have any photos of these bamboos?

Dear Bamboo Enthusiasts, especially those interested in long internode ones,
Thanks to one of my ex-worker for sabotaging one of my shipments of long internodal strips, I have finally got the time to climb the mountain and get fresh supplies of 2-3 inches in diameter as well as the photos.

See post at forum - Growing Bamboo > Pictures from a wild grove - Schizostachyum grande (http://www.bamboocraft.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1705)
Later this week, I will post photos from another subspecies with average diameter no more than 1 inch.
Enjoy!
