The Bamboo Society (EBS Great Britian):

Friday 6 May
11.00am Lamorran, Upper Castle Road, St Mawes
Directions: take the first right as you enter St Mawes just past the garage on right.
Spectacular sea views and sub-tropical planting including over 30 species of hardy palms.
Lunch in the idyllic fishing village of St Mawes.
Afternoon: St Just in Roseland: visit a creek-side church in a sub-tropical garden.
Penjerrick: exotic and rare plants form a wild but peaceful garden.
Saturday 7 May
Morning: Tregrahan: probably the finest collection of mature rare plants in Cornwall. Huge 19th century trees and shrubs and many new recently collected wild plants. We will go off the usual visitor areas to view several new bamboo introductions.
Lunch: the Britannia Inn.
Afternoon: Pine Lodge Gardens: an immaculate 30 acres containing many rare and wild collected plants. All are well labelled and there is a good nursery selling many of the plants seen, including some of the new introductions.
Walk around Carwinion.
Sunday 8 May
Morning: By request, a more leisurely visit to Mike Bell’s 1.25 acre bamboo plantation. Alternative venues in the area will be listed on the map supplied for those who do not wish to spend the whole morning there.
Lunch: Locally made pasties.
Afternoon: Mike Bell’s house and a cream tea.
Susanne Lucas, Ned Jaquith and Delores Holland, all of whom need no introduction for those familiar with bamboo growing in the USA, will be joining this event. Jan Oprins, the world expert on micropropagation of bamboos, will be joining us for the three days. Various talks are organised for the evenings based upon bamboos in America and micropropagation. This event is shaping into a special meeting not to be missed.
Regrettably we were not able to organise the visit to Tresco this year as the helicopter was fully booked for the whole weekend. We plan to collect names and money from members later this year so that we are better placed to book the helicopter in early January.
As usual, there is no charge for the Cornwall meeting, but accommodation, meals and entrance to gardens should be allowed for. If you want to have an evening meal at Carwinion on Friday and/or Saturday please book with Jane Rogers (01326 250258) in advance.
